The firm, which is the largest full service law firm in Florida with over 400 attorneys and consultants intends to provide its Florida clients with expanded services in New York, to assist New York clients in both Florida and Latin America and to serve the New York market. "New York is a natural market for the firm," said Akerman Senterfitt Chairman and CEO Tom Cardwell. "Our lawyers and our clients have many connections with New York. It is logical for the largest law firm in Florida to have a presence in the nation's financial and business center." The firm will develop its New York office with lawyers whose practices are consistent with the focus of the firm. These include the corporate, real estate, litigation and Latin American areas. The office will open with seven lawyers. Thatcher Stone, as Shareholder, will focus on corporate and securities transactions, cross-border finance, equipment leasing, related litigation, and debt and equity restructuring and bankruptcy. Thatcher's transactions include the restructuring of more than $1 billion of loans and leases in the Varig, S.A. debt and lease moratorium; the restructuring of more than $900 million in secured credit to Lan Chile, the then largest secured transaction ever concluded in Chile; and the securitization by GE Capital of the $1 billion aircraft portfolio of Chemical Bank. Thatcher was a partner with Alston & Bird LLP in New York prior to joining Akerman Senterfitt.
