The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) announced recently the release of a new book by President and CEO Richard F. Chambers, CIA, CGAP, CCSA, CRMA, that provides unique insights regarding career success for internal auditors. Published by The IIA’s Research Foundation, Lessons Learned on the Audit Trail is based on Chambers’ nearly 40 years of experience in internal auditing, including directing the internal audit functions at major private and public organizations.

The book offers a fresh perspective of internal auditing as a rewarding career. Unlike auditing texts, it’s not about numbers or how to plan and perform an audit. Chambers explains the lessons that auditors don’t learn in school, in a remarkable story that spans time zones, industries, and top levels of government. Its real-world advice is based on experiences as national internal audit advisory leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers, inspector general of the Tennessee Valley Authority, deputy inspector general of the U.S. Postal Service, director of U.S. Army Internal Review and, ultimately, president and CEO of The IIA, the global professional association for internal auditors.

Harold Silverman, vice president-internal audit at The Wendy’s Co., calls Lessons Learned on the Audit Trail “a comprehensive playbook for anyone committed to becoming a successful leader in the internal audit profession.”

“Richard Chambers has been there and done that,” says Joseph T. Wells, founder and chairman of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. “Using real-life examples, he underscores themes of diligence, ethics, professionalism, and integrity.”

According to Cynthia Cooper, author of Extraordinary Circumstances: The Journey of a Corporate Whistleblower and CEO of The CooperGroup LLC, Chambers “shares often hard-won lessons learned while on the audit trail, as well as principles that can help you transform your career, take advantage of opportunities and be well prepared for the challenges ahead.”
Lessons Learned on the Audit Trail is available in hardcover or as an e-book at http://www.theiia.org/bookstore/.
