The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) announced has the election of Anton van Wyk, CIA, CRMA, QIAL, a native of South Africa and partner with PwC, as chairman of the organization’s 2014-2015 Global Board of Directors. Van Wyk is the first global chairman from the African continent.

The election of van Wyk and the entire Global Board was held at The IIA’s annual business meeting following the organization’s 73rd International Conference in London.

The IIA is the largest organization representing the interests of the profession and provides ethical and professional guidance, continuing education, certifications, and more to over 180,000 members worldwide.

“Anton is a dynamic and enthusiastic leader in our profession, and I’m certain he will accomplish great things during his tenure as global chairman,” said IIA President and CEO Richard Chambers, CIA, CGAP, CCSA, CRMA, QIAL.

Van Wyk said he plans to use his term as chairman to urge internal auditors worldwide to be mindful of potential gaps between internal audit services and stakeholder expectations. New technologies, he said, are creating new opportunities as well as risks that could expand such gaps.

“As we rise to meet new challenges, we must focus on the opportunities that will help us overcome these obstacles,” said van Wyk. “We must focus on becoming better prepared, better informed, and fully engaged with stakeholders.”

Van Wyk, has 25 years of experience in corporate governance, risk management and internal audit. He currently is Africa Risk Assurance Services Leader and Partner with PwC in Johannesburg, South Africa, and leads the company’s Africa Central and Southern Africa Risk Assurance Services practice. He was a board member of PwC’s Africa Governance and South African Governance Board, and is a member of the company’s Business School Board.

Van Wyk also is a full member of the King Committee on Governance in South Africa and chairs its Internal Audit Task Force. The King Committee issued the ground-breaking code of corporate governance that advances the concept of integrated reporting. Three King Reports on Corporate Governance (1994, 2002, and 2009) have been described as "the most effective summary of the best international practices in corporate governance." Van Wyk is chairman of the South African Corporate Governance Network.

Van Wyk most recently was The IIA Global Board’s senior vice chairman and has served as vice chairman of professional practices and vice chairman of professional certifications. He was chairman of The IIA’s 2009 International Conference hosted by South Africa, and has served as president of IIA-South Africa.
